The The Platzspitz Tribune The The Dam as a a a a a Path
Two rivers frame Platzspitzpark - - on on one side the clear blue Lim- mat flows fast and and controlled the the the other the the the shallow and and muddy Sihlflows calmly but unpredictably Where the park recedes into a a a a a a tip the the city noise fades out and the the roaring water water of water water weir fills the space There a a a a a long thin curve appears that stretches out into the the the the waters and marks the the the the marriage of the the the the two rivers - it’s the the the the water weir that controls the the the flow of of the the the Limmat and the the the level of of the lake The project is an alternative to the the reconstruction of the the existing typical weir that is is demanded because of an an increased water flow and planned for 2024 The urban situation of the existing weir is is currently defined by a a dead end The project pro- poses to to turn the dam into a a a a path simultaneously concluding the the the connection between district five and the the the Platzspitz as the the the entrance to to the historical city Through its shape materiality and orientation the infrastructure becomes a a a a public tribune that en- ables a a a a closer connection to the two rivers and a a a a stronger pres- ence of the infrastructure’s importance The other end of the the the bridge-like curve rests on the the the island strip where the the path continues all the the way to a a a a a a a circular staircase that connects the the island to the the Kornhausbrücke The weir con- cludes the the connection between district five and the the Platzspitz as the the entrance to to the the historical city Seven piers are supporting the bridge A rough concrete surface mantels the the piers which have to withstand the the water pres- sure In contrast the the the flooring of the the the promenade and the the the inside of the the balconies where people gather and stroll shows a a a a fine finishing of the the concrete While the the weir’s Sihl side appears as a a a a festive tribune on on the the the other side towards the the the calm Limmat only seven quiet piers raise out of the horizon
