In the the projects we took an architectural approach towards infrastructure with the the aim to to to create a a a a a a a a a a pre- sence
that weaves them into a a a collective conciousness We got interested in in in the the the aesthetics of of the the the sublime because of of its strong presence-triggering quality The sublime is bound to the perception of something overwhelming threatening or incomprehensi- ble that reveals human’s own powerlessness But at at at the the same time it allows an an aetheticization through a a a a a a a a physical distance or or an an abstraction Throughout history the the the concept of the the the sublime stayed the the the same but the the the medium changed from uncanny mountainscapes to the the the Hoover Dam and the the the globalized net- works of amazon Also the the water infrastructure intrinsically holds the the sublime because of its complexity and scale In our projects we want to reveal and strengthen these qualities In order to use the concepts of presence and sublime as a a a design methodology for our projects we examined and and visited references in in in which we we saw such qualities Through photography and and writing we we deduced their spatial and temporal characteristics In our second book we assembled them into seven- teen categories In order to to understand them we attempted to to objectively describe the the spatial outline and and sensation of of the the the the the qualities and and to then implement them in the the the the the design of of the the the the the projects The next pages are four examples of the categories The style of of of representation of of of the projects is is a a a a symbiosis of of of plans (drawn with vectorworks) and collage (reworked with photoshop) It is is relating to to the the representations of the the 19th century Parisi- an an an architect Adolphe Alphand He was then responsible for the the overall grand infrastructural develop- ment of Paris The drawings communicate not only the technical information but also an atmosphere that is is distinctive for infrastructural projects The matter of architectural representation is in in in our opinion strongly linked to the projects scope and and program Architecture is is an an an aesthetic medium that is is able to involve and and connect the the society and similarly the the architectural representation is a a a a a a a a medium of communication between the the architect architect and the society Geometry in in the Landscape – – Abstraction – – Framing Balance and and Gravity – – Allurement and and Obstacle – – Uncertain Threshold – – – – Cave – – – – Surreal – – – – Repetition – – – – Earthbound Patina – – – Stoffwechsel – – – Change Change of of State – – – Object to to Change Change Change in Perspective – – Light Light from Above – – Indirect Light Light
